Midleton Very Rare - New Age, New Style

€1,900 plus postage

Midleton Very Rare is the quintessential example of premium high end blended Irish whiskey. It is one of the cornerstones of the Midleton Distillery range. This annual release is eagerly anticipated each year and although tens of thousands of bottles are shipped all over the world for distribution, getting your hands on any bottle of Midleton Very Rare is never easy.

From 1984 when the first Midleton Very Rare was released up until 2016, the bottle style and packaging was traditional and reserved. While always coming individually numbered and with a certificate of authentication, it was the epitome of traditional Irish whiskey packaging. In 2017 the distillery created a bold new look for the range which included an elegant new bottle design and beautifully crafted wooden box to house the bottle and certificate of authenticity. It was the perfect new styling for a new age of Irish whiskey growth. The new styling has been a huge success further emboldening the brand at the top of the premium Irish whiskey blends.

With this selection we are presenting the opportunity to taste three years 2018, 2019 and 2020. Every annual release has a unique flavour and tasting notes.

Tasting notes you might find..... or you might find your own.

MVR 2018:

  • Nose: Poached pear, coffee bean, lemon, mint leaf and yellow plum.

  • Palate: Peppery barley warmth begins to develop on the palate, paired with caramel, banana fritters, charred oak and citrus oils.

  • Finish: Honeyed cereals, cedar, subtly leafy at points, green apple.

MVR 2019:

  • Nose: Ripe fruit notes of sweet pear and apple, adding a delicate touch of mango. Brown sugar and vanilla, nutmeg and clove spice.

  • Taste: Luscious, silky texture with the orchard fruits and pot still spices coming to the fore. The grain’s soft floral notes linger.

  • Finish:  The fruits and gentle spice slowly fade, giving way to the oak foundation that leaves a mild roasted coffee a until the very end.

MVR 2020:

  • Nose: Bold pot still spiciness, with a pinch of red chillie flake fruitiness. Soon enough, fudge and chocolatey coffee notes appear.

  • Palate: Orange oil, mature oak, more crumbly fudge, toasty cinnamon and five-spice, a whiff of floral malt.

  • Finish: The big, vibrant spices linger on the finish, plus hints of juicy nectarine and candied peels.

The Revival

€900 plus postage

This trio is selected from the five exclusive and limited release whiskeys which was launched to celebrate the opening of the new Teeling Distillery in the heart of Dublin. The Teeling name is synonymous with Irish whiskey and while at the time of releasing these bottles they did not have matured whiskey from the new Dublin distillery, they had carried some of the fine liquid produced in Cooley which forms the basis of this set of releases.

These three are our favorites from the five bottle release of single malt whiskeys. The final Volume V released back in early 2018.

Revival Volume II:

A 13 Year Old that was distilled in 2002 and matured for 12 years in ex-Bourbon barrels before being finished for 12 months in Calvados casks.

Revival Volume II:
A 14 Year Old, again distilled in 2002 and matured in ex-Bourbon casks. However, it was then finished in Pineau des Charentes casks.

Revival Volume V:
The final release of this now famous commemorative collection is a 12-Year-Old Single Malt that was aged initially in ex-Bourbon barrels before being finished in a combination of Cognac and Brandy barrels,

The New Kids On The Block

€500 plus postage

This selection titled, "New Kids On The Block" provides three of the finest examples of new whiskey brands and distilleries to arrive on the scene during this Irish whiskey revival over the last decade.

Firstly, from Limerick and the legend that is Jack O'Shea and the Sailor's Home team is a smooth single pot still whiskey, The Haven. Having listened to Jack and the team describe its simplicity we were skeptical, having tasted it we were converted. This very limited inaugural release is an epic example of what fine ingredients and a mature distillation and ageing process can achieve.

Secondly, from the "Curious Mind of P.J. Rigney" in Leitrim comes the very limited first release of the Drumshanbo single pot still whiskey. This unique dram is their own liquid distilled in the mid west. The addition of Barra Oats gives it an incredible creamy taste. This distillery is destined for great things and this first whiskey we believe will be one that will be remembered.

Our third selection is a fine example of the amazing innovation that is being carried out within Irish whiskey. This Currach single malt is an extremely rare bottle from the founders cask release. The use of fired Kombu seaweed casks to finish this whiskey gives and amazing flavour to the whiskey. A completly unique idea from Patrick Shelley and the team in Skibereen, Co. Cork.
